Snow Capped Mountains Friday, Oct. 17:

We left Las Vegas and drove 482 miles to Fruitis, Colorado to spend the night.  The original plan was to drive to Green River, Utah, but when John tried to make reservations last night all the motels were full.  It was fall break for Utah schools and Green River was near a popular National Forest.

About 4:00 PM we left I-15 and merged onto I-70 at 7180 feet elevation.  Cresting the mountains we saw snow covered mountain tops.

Red colored cliffsAbout 5:30 we stopped to take pictures and stretch our legs at Castle View in the San Rafael area.  Elevation 7,000 feet.

Canyon like CliffsWe drove through areas similar to the Grand Canyon and Painted Desert then through gray hills, then flat land toward Green River.  We ate at Arby's in Green River and drove on to Fruita, Colorado to spend the night.  We drove 8 hours today through beautiful scenery.

(I tried to plan no more than six hours driving in any one day, but because of the filled up motels in Green River and the scarcity of settlements along the interstate we had to make this the longest day of driving.)

Highway following Colorado RiverSaturday, Oct. 18:

It was 49 degrees at 10:45 this morning, we were 130 miles to Denver and drove through canyons along the Colorado River.

Streets of Vail, ColoradoWe ate lunch at Vail, Colorado, then drove through the Rockies to Denver with amazing elevations, we watched it keep going up on the Garmin, at one point we went through a tunnel that was a mile and a half long, the altitude was 11,155 feet and the temperature at 1:00 PM was 54 degrees.  One overlook said "View Big Horn sheep" but we didn't see any, there was snow in patches.

We spent the night in Goodland Kansas.  Past Denver the roads straightened out and the land was flat and boring.

Oz Museum, somewhere in KansasSunday, Oct. 19:

Today we drove across Kansas from Goodland to Kansas City.  There were lots of big farms and flat land until we got to Topeka and started seeing some hills.

Before we got to Kansas City there were signs for the Wizard of Oz Museum.  Sandra just had to go, it was 9 miles off the interstate.  Sandra's friend, Lana, told us to look up Dorothy.  If she was there she was this grouchy old woman who kept coming out of a back room, looking around and going back in.  It was mostly overpriced trinkets.

Yellow brick roadAcross the street from the Museum was the yellow brick road between two buildings.  It didn't go to Oz, though, just to a parking lot behind the buildings.

Inside of the Granite City RestaurantWe made it to Kansas City about 6:00 PM and asked the motel clerk about a good place to eat.  She sent us to an outlet mall similar to Tangiers.  I was expecting another Arby's meal but there was this nice looking restaurant behind the mall that had a crowded parking lot.  We went in and it was kid's eat free so it was crowded, but we didn't have to wait.  I had the best steak I've eaten in a long time, (after all, it was Kansas City) and Sandra ate salmon with wild rice and asparagus with crème Brule for dessert.  Great meal!
